KUCHING: Over 20,000 people attended the parade held in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of Malaysia Day here, one of the largest ever held in Sarawak.
The show began with a bang — literally — at 8am when six cannons at the historic Padang Merdeka were fired across the Sarawak River to mark the start of the parade.
The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, accompanied by Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Hajah Haminah, then graced the ceremony.
The national event was attended by Sarawak Head of State Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Muhammad Salahuddin and Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Norkiah. Also present were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Haji Muhyiddin Mohd Yassin, Sarawak Chief Minister Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud, federal as well as state ministers and elected representatives.
